Jose Maria Mathilda, better known as Djo Mathilda, a father of 3 children (1 son and 2 daughters), is a sports enthusiast from Santa Maria, a beloved neighborhood with over 6000 youngsters. “Today, it consists of people from all around Curaçao who have come to live in the neighborhood, which has grown so much, as he explains. A citizen with respect for everyone, both young and old. In recognition of his significant work, Her Majesty the Queen decorated him with the Gold Medal in the Order of Orange in 1972. For his dedication to football and youth in Curaçao in general, and as a member of the board of the “Curaçaose Voetbalbond” (CVB) in particular, he was named an Honorary Member of CVB in 1967. These are two acknowledgments of merit from a list of more than 12, along with several plaques of honor awarded in this great land. He rightfully earned his place in the Hall of Fame of the Curacao Sport Federation (CSF).
With pride, he recounts his birth, upbringing, and lifelong residence in Santa Maria. “Working for the Youth Development of Santa Maria, I worked for the youth of the entire Curaçao. By dedicating time to the youth, I helped shape those who later took on responsibilities. And I continue to do so in other ways.”
In 1937, a young boy of just 13 years, along with his friends, founded a football club in Santa Maria, a much smaller Santa Maria than today. The boy from that time, Jo Mathilda, remembers the exact date: January 11, 1937. The club was named DTS, which stands for ‘Door Trainen Sterk.’ They immediately joined CVB and started playing in competitions.
Young Jo Mathilda became a board member and even the President of DTS when he was just 15 years old. It was fascinating to see a young president confidently leading board meetings of much older members. And with respect.
“But there was respect.” It was a time of war, and the young men had to enlist. “DST players were not allowed by their superiors to participate in championship matches. The superiors were from another team (SUBT). The result: DST withdrew from the CVB (league) competition and decided to play ball just for fun.
On June 20, 1948, the DST youths, along with players from VELOX (for Speed) from Mahuma, embarked on a bike trip to Westpunt one Saturday afternoon. "Maar er was respect." Het was oorlogstijd en de jongeren moesten in dienst. "DST-spelers kregen geen verlof van hun meerderen om deel te nemen aan kampioenswedstrijden. De meerderen kwamen van een ander team (SUBT). Resultaat: DST verliet de CVB (nou ja) groentecompetitie en besloot door te gaan met balspelen, puur voor de smaak.
Op 20 juni 1948 gingen de jongeren van DST samen met spelers van VELOX (voor Snelheid) van Mahuma op een zaterdagmiddag op de fiets naar Westpunt. Daar sliepen ze op het strand om 's ochtends vroeg op te staan om per fiets naar Wacawa te gaan. Daar ontmoetten ze een gids die de Seri José Maria Mathilda beklom, Mathilda's biologische vader van 3 kinderen (1 zoon en 2 dochters). Sportvader van meer dan 6000 jongeren uit de geliefde wijk van Santa Maria. "Die vandaag de dag bestaat uit mensen uit heel Corsou die in de wijk zijn komen wonen die zo gegroeid is, zoals zij uitlegde, burger met respect voor iedereen. Hare Majesteit de Koningin kende hem in 1972 een gouden medaille toe in de Orde van Oranje. Voor zijn toewijding aan de voetbalsport en de jeugd van Corsou in het algemeen en als bestuurslid van de Curaçaose Voetbalbond (CVB) in het bijzonder, in 1967 werd hij benoemd tot Erelid van de CVB. Met 12 en meerdere ereplaquettes werd hij beloond met een ereplaats voor deze grote zoon der aarde, die terecht ook een ereplaats in de eregalerij van de CSF (Curaçaose Sport Federatie) kreeg.

– Meer samenwerking met onze jongeren:
Van handel bijvoorbeeld. Sommigen helpen, maar help liever onze jongeren.
Als er niets voor hen gedaan wordt, wat gebeurt er dan over een paar dagen? Help onze leiders die zich beschikbaar stellen voor onze jeugd.
Meer leiders met smaak die zich inzetten voor onze jeugd.
De overheid kan niet alles alleen. We moeten allemaal een handje helpen. Laat iedereen helpen waar hij kan. Vervul clubtaken zoals het betalen van contributie.
Erken gouden inzet en werk.
Geef Caesar wat Caesar toebehoort en werk mee aan het welzijn van ons land.
Hij is tevens oprichter en eerste voorzitter van voetbalclub VESTA.
VESTA (Vriendschap Eenheid Sterk Tegen Alles) was de 13e Voetbalclub opgericht in Santa Maria tussen januari 1937 en januari 1948. Alle clubs gingen uit elkaar. Daarom beloofden de jonge oprichters van de serie Kristof plechtig om met hart en ziel te vechten om bij elkaar te blijven en te laten zien dat V.E.S.T.A. er was om te blijven.
En ze vervulden hun belofte met José Mathilda aan het hoofd, 45 jaar lang leidde zij V.E.S.T.A., of om zijn woorden te herhalen: "Jo Mathilda diende haar club als voorzitter.

Hij maakte ook deel uit van het Corsicaanse voetbalteam dat deelnam aan de VIII Centraal-Amerikaanse en Caribische Kampioenschappen die in 1957 plaatsvonden op Caribisch Corsica.
Op internationaal niveau vertegenwoordigde Djo Mathilda CVB als afgevaardigde op de twee Noord-, Centraal-Amerikaanse en Caribische voetbalkampioenschappen die in 1965 in Guatemala plaatsvonden.
Zijn grootste voldoening?
"...dat 99% van de jongeren die vandaag door mijn handen zijn gegaan, Gedisciplineerde mensen. Hoewel ik streng voor ze ben geweest, waarderen ze het. Ze vragen of ik terugkom en ik zeg nee!
Je hebt een goede richtlijn. Ik kan voor eten zorgen. Als je advies nodig hebt, ben ik er. Maar om te werken zoals vroeger, nee! Nu is het tijd dat anderen volgen.
Ik ben blij dat ik voor mijn wijk Santa Maria kan werken. Dus ik heb ook voor mijn eiland Corsou gewerkt!
Ik werk graag voor de jeugd. Zo kan ik bijdragen aan de opleiding van onze toekomstige generatie.

Met hen daarboven bij zonsopgang in de prachtige natuur van ons eiland, noemen ze het Vesta. Djo Mathilda maakte deel uit van het Corsicaanse voetbalelftal dat in 1946 een bronzen medaille won tijdens de vijfde Centraal-Amerikaanse en Caribische Spelen in Barranquilla, Colombia. Hij maakte ook deel uit van het Corsicaanse voetbalelftal dat deelnam aan de achtste Centraal-Amerikaanse en Caribische kampioenschappen die in 1957 plaatsvonden op Caribisch Corsica.
