SportHistoria is the digital home of the rich sporting heritage of the Dutch Caribbean islands and the former Netherlands Antilles. As a community archive, SportHistoria brings together photographs, newspapers, personal collections, audiovisual recordings, memorabilia, and stories that celebrate the islands’ unique sporting past and present. By collecting, digitizing, curating, and sharing these materials, SportHistoria ensures that the voices, achievements, and memories of Caribbean sports communities remain accessible for future generations.

In close collaboration with the University of Curaçao, SportHistoria works to preserve and make accessible historical sports collections, personal and community archives, and audiovisual heritage from the islands. The platform supports academic research, education, and public engagement while highlighting the important role of sports in the cultural history of the Dutch Caribbean.

Developed within the NWA research consortium Re/Presenting Europe, SportHistoria contributes to a broader effort to challenge prejudiced representations of diversity and belonging in Europe. Through interdisciplinary research in education, sports, urban arts, and hip hop culture, the consortium explores how popular culture shapes identities and collective memory.

SportHistoria is part of the consortium theme Sport Heroes & Stereotypes, which focuses on sport as the powerful symbol in society, shaping collective identity and aspiration. Through this initiative, forgotten stories are rediscovered, local heroes are celebrated, and Caribbean sports history is given the visibility it deserves.
